Cavers: Chris Scaife, Duncan Jones, Chris Kelly, Ron Price, Carolina Smith
We parked by the Cilcain Bridge, walked uphill along the road to a corner, then followed a footpath to the entrance. Dunc, Chris, Ron and Carol went in first while I entertained the littlun, walking along the dry river bed and scrambling in the quarry.
After about an hour and a half, the A team was out and it was my turn to go down. Chris Kelly, imprisoned by the fact that I was driving him home, had no option but to join me.
We went down Ron’s ladder, just inside the entrance, and followed the muddy passage, via a mixture of crawling, stooping and sliding, to the streamway. A pleasant amble along this and we were soon at the Main Chamber — a big place with some humble formations. We followed the stream as far as the ironically-described Enormous Chamber — shattered rock penetrated by tree roots and held up by a single piece of wood. We turned back and emerged into sunshine. The thunderstorms did the decent thing and waited until we were back home.
