This very picturesque cave starts with a lake, so we borrowed a boat and blew the damn thing up. Once inflated, we paddled across and disembarked onto a traverse line, with a rope in situ. That made sense, everyone on the campsite had said that there was an in situ rope.
The cave beyond was striking, with wonderful formations everywhere. We wandered and gazed and photographed and were amazed. Some chaps walked past us but they didn’t look like the sort to take the rope away.
We returned to the pitch head, just 30m from our inflatable, and were soon deflated. Those buggers had de-rigged the rope and left us stranded. We needed a hero.
Tom Howard saved the day, rigging a homemade traverse line out of bits of cloth, like a fair maiden escaping her wicked stepmother. He returned to the boat and sailed away, then ran to his car, got a 30m rope and returned to rig the traverse line and save our lives.
