Just a quick trip report about the Gaping Gill winch meet trip on Thursday, 16th August. Chris Kelly brought along a climbing friend, Neil, who had done a lot of climbing and abseiling, though not with a stop and not in a cave. We entered through Stream Passage Pot, which was very, very wet. It was a lot of fun going down though. Neil didn’t have any problems with any of the deviations, which is a good thing considering how many there are. Once at the bottom it took us (or rather Chris Kelly, who was leading the way) quite a while to find the correct route to Gaping Gill chamber. There were a number of people about. A lot of water was coming down the entrance shaft and Rat Hole. A pretty amazing sight. We made our way up Bar Pot main pitch and then out via Bar Pot. We had initially considered doing another in/out trip, but Chris Kelly had to get back as he had to work that night. Plus, we were all a bit tired. It’s funny how quickly one can lose cave fitness, especially if you haven’t done SRT in a while. All in all it was a very fun trip. Made me remember how much fun SRT trips can be.
